Father's Day S01E08

 1. Summed up in one sentence The one in which Rose has the Doctor so whipped that he sacrifices himself and all of existence just so Rose can spend some time with her dad. 2. The Doctor As previously mentioned, the Doctor is from this point forth, henceforth and forever whipped by Rose. He wants to be mad at her. He really, really does and actually tries to throw a tissy fit just to demonstrate to her how very much not whipped he is.  But he is.  A lot.  Helplessly so. Pathetically so. The Doctor was well in his right to feel used by Rose when she makes the request to go back in time to when her dad died so she could be with him, but saves him instead. The Doctor points out that Rose didn't decide to join the Doctor when he said the TARDIS traveled through space. She ran to him after he mentioned it traveled back in time, and she admitted that it was always in the back of her mind up to this point. But he discovers fairly quickly that he is indeed whipped and is unable to save the

The Long Game S01E07

  1. Summed up in one sentence The one in which peoples' foreheads open up while fake news is transmitted straight to their brains by a globby creature with fangs that hangs from the ceiling.  2. The Doctor The Doctor had enough to deal with in the past episode so he gets to have a break and just do what the Doctor does best: get worried about the state of reality, ask questions, maim electronics with his sonic screwdriver, get to the bottom of the mystery, you know, stuff like that.  He is also very supportive of Rose and what she wants to do, even when that includes bringing along that one douchebag from the previous episode she has a crush on. What's his name?  Adam? Brian? I'm pretty sure he's Adam.  Anyway, not important. He doesn't last long.  But as I was saying, the Doctor plays the wingman to Rose, urging them to go explore together on a date, helping Rose to impress her boy toy. It's an uncharacteristically nice thing for the Doctor to do this since we

Dalek S01E06

  1.  Summed up in one sentence The one in which this show makes a drastic turn from silly adventure to the deep dark rabbit hole of existential sadness.  2. The Doctor This episode pulls us all through the wringer along with the Doctor and Rose. The Doctor is forced to see his inner darkness when he reunites with his oldest and most bitter enemy. The one and only enemy responsible for the extinction of the time lords (well, for now anyway).  The first scene they have together is intense. It begins with the Doctor terrified upon realizing he's locked in a room with a Dalek. Then as he realizes that the Dalek's weapons are offline so to speak, he goes from relief and joy, to intense anger, to circling the helpless Dalek gloating at his powerlessness, to sorrow at realizing that he is as alone as the Dalek, both members of an extinct species.  When the Dalek points out their similar circumstances, the Doctor then goes to murderous outrage, doing his best to kill the Dalek before

World War Three pt 2 S01E05

1. Summed up in one sentence The baby shaped, pea green, farting aliens fail to take over/destroy the world. (I know. A big shock for us all.) 2. The Doctor Now that Jackie knows who the Doctor really is and what Rose has been up to, the Doctor faces pressure from Jackie to keep Rose safe. Not that the Doctor has put Rose in danger willy nilly, but he must ask himself the question if he is doing enough to keep her out of danger. Not only that, but has to make the difficult decision to destroy the aliens and save the world, even though it would most likely end in Rose's death. Of course she doesn't die, but it's still a major conflict for him, proving his ever deepening feelings for Rose.  3. The Companions Not only is there Rose and Harriet Jones helping the Doctor out, but Mickey begins to grow a pair in this episode by rescuing Jackie from an alien and helping the Doctor hack into nuclear missile stuff. Mickey has a fun journey from the sniveling, fear struck boyfriend to

Aliens of London pt 1 S01E04

1. Summed up in one sentence Oversized, pea colored, baby shaped, farting aliens with long claws attempt to take over the world. 2. The Doctor Two very exciting things happen with the Doctor in this episode. Firstly, we get to see the very delightful abuse the Doctor inflicts on the TARDIS with the mallet. Secondly, we see the first time the Doctor orders around the military on earth, and it looks real good on him, and continues to look good on him all the way till earth decides to make him president of the earth? (that happens around the time of Ten, I don't remember exactly when.) But what I do remember is that Ten is reluctant to take control and give orders to earth military, whereas Nine has no issue at all in divvying assignments. An interesting difference between the two. Nine is closer to his military experience with the Time War, so perhaps that explains some of it. 3. The Companions Along with Rose, we get to meet Harriet Jones for the first time! (before she's Harrie

The Unquiet Dead S01E03

1. Summed up in one sentence Evil ghost/angel aliens inhabit dead human bodies to take over earth. (What percentage of these sentences will end in those same four words?) 2. The Doctor I think the Doctor is doing pretty usual Doctor stuff in this episode. The TARDIS ends up in the wrong place (embarrassing . . . .). But if they didn't end up in Cardiff, then we wouldn't have those delightful Victorian Welsh accents to listen to!  As usual, the Doctor sees that there's a problem, and he takes measures to "solve" the problem. The initial problem seems to be that the dead people aren't staying dead, the center of this action taking place at a funeral home (also very embarrassing). Since the Doctor and Rose have landed themselves smack dab in the middle of the Spiritual Movement, of course the first conclusion people of Cardiff make is that the deceased spirits are simply coming back to inhabit their bodies.  Now we know the Doctor is hardly one to side with the s

The End of the World S01E02 (Spoiler warnings from here on out!!!)

1. Summed up in one sentence The one in which a thin blanket of skin sabotages a spaceship to blow up to get the insurance money. 2. The Doctor We get to see a plethora of sides to the Doctor in this episode, which is nice because he was mostly an unknowable enigma in the previous episode. Surprise number one takes place when he absconds with a lovely tree lady to investigate into the strange happenings within the spaceship. During this time, the lovely tree lady (Lady Groot?) finds herself intrigued with the Doctor, just as Rose was in the previous episode. She’s so interested that she uses a clever creepy device that allows her to scan anyone and that device discloses all the information on that person/species? (Basically a pokedex, or a very effective way to stalk someone) Anyway, disregarding any discussions on consent, she uses this device on the Doctor and finds out he is part of a species that was believed to have all died out. She brings this finding up with the Doctor while he

Rose S01E01

Summed up in one sentence The episode in which a big blob of steaming plastic hidden underneath the eye of London sends signals to all other plastic things to take over the planet.  The Doctor Yay for the ninth Doctor! Even though Christopher Eccleston only got one season as the Doctor, he has a powerful presence, and laid the groundwork for all the future Doctors to come, and for that I’m so grateful to him. You will come to find I absolutely love ALL the doctors. All the actors have been absolutely splendid in putting their own spin on it while keeping some kind of tie to central themes that do define the Doctor. I of course have my favorite Doctor (which will become apparent I think without me saying anything), but I truly and deeply love them all. The Doctor himself in the first episode of the newly reincarnated show is elusive, not answering Rose’s questions directly and always on the move away from her (and her mother Jackie’s advancements on him). He is new and mysterious to Ros

DOCTOR WHO in six

This section of my blog is basically my own hot take on each episode of Doctor Who , specifically "new Who." If I'm being completely honest, it's just an excuse during quarantine to studiously watch Doctor Who all over again.  I can't promise I'll have anything brand new to say, but it will be my own perspective on it, which may or may not eventually just become a podcast.....?  These reviews will be separated into 6 categories, hence the name of these reviews: DOCTOR WHO in six. I'm also putting it out there that I'm not exactly a true fan, in that I have only seen Doctor Who from the ninth doctor to the present day. I wish I was cool enough to go back and watch classic Who, but I'm not, so there you go. I will be lacking knowledge of most things that happened before nine so I apologize if my analysis is lacking or even incorrect.  With that said..... here we go!
